Matt Brown is the lone Bear to advance past round of 16 in the Baylor Invitational.
Sept. 22, 2007
WACO, Texas - After claiming the championship of the H.E.B. Baylor Invitational five of six seasons and the last five straight, there's just one hope left for a Baylor men's tennis player winning the championship trophy in 2007, junior Matt Brown.
Brown, the lone Bear to advance to the quarterfinals, claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ole Miss' Bram Ten Berge in quarterfinal action. Brown, ranked No. 110 nationally, will play 49th-ranked and sixth-seeded Moritz Baumann of Wisconsin. Baumann upset seventh-ranked and top-seeded Erling Tveit of Ole Miss 7-6(4), 6-4, to advance to play Brown. In the other quarterfinal action Texas' Kellen Damico will take on second-seeded and 18th-ranked Robbye Poole of Ole Miss. Semifinal matches are slated to begin at 8:30 a.m., on Sunday with the championship match to follow.
Earlier in the day, four of the five BU players fell in round of 16 action in Green (A) Bracket play. Junior Matt Brown was the Bears' lone winner in the round of 16 when he defeated TCU's Adrian Simon 7-5, 6-2.
Baylor's Dominik Mueller, the tournament's No. 8 seed, won his first set against TCU's Zach Nicholas but dropped a second-set tiebreaker before retiring from the match due to cramps. Denes Lukacs, Attila Bucko and David Galic all lost in straight sets to end their tournament competition.
