WACO, Texas - Despite four freshmen making their collegiate debuts, Matt Knoll's men's tennis team enjoyed a very successful first day of action in the 11th-annual Baylor-HEB Invitational at the Hurd Tennis Center on Friday.

Four singles players, including three rookies, advanced to the round of 16 by winning two matches each on Friday. Enjoying victories in the first two rounds were third-seeded Roberto Maytin, eighth-seeded Mate Zsiga, Marko Krickovic and Lars Behlen. Maytin is a junior while Behlen, Krickovic and Zsiga are all freshmen. Sophomore Robert Verzaal won his round of 64 match but fell in the round of 32 while freshman Robbie Korth lost his first match of the day. After being down in the first set, Korth battled back to win in a tiebreaker but fell in the final two sets.

In doubles, Baylor's top-seeded tandem of Krickovic and Maytin advanced to the tournament quarterfinals by handily defeating ULL's Damian Farinola and Carlin Murray, 8-2. Behlen and Zsiga blanked Laredo's Luis Hernandez and Felipe Jensen, 8-0, but lost to second-seeded Marc Bruche and Will Vasos of Iowa, 8-6. Korth and Verzaal teamed up in the round of 32 but lost to ULL's Rick DeGroot and Yanick Mandl, 8-6.

"It was a good first day, a lot of tennis and they guys did very well. I thought it was a great way to begin the season. It was the first college action for our four freshmen and that was very valuable," said Knoll.

On Saturday Baylor's four singles players will begin round of 16 matches at 10 a.m. Maytin faces Alex Ferrero of Portland, Krickovic takes on Carlin Murry (ULL), Zsiga plays Yannick Junger (UTSA) and Behlen faces off against Tsvetan Mihov of Oklahoma. The round of 16 winners will play quarterfinal matches that are slated to begin at 2 p.m.

Doubles quarterfinal action begins at 9 a.m. with Krickovic and Matyin matching up against Portland's Alex Ferrero and Michel Hukwo. Doubles semifinal matches are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
