Senior Michal Kokta is Baylor's lone remaining player in the BU-HEB Intercollegiate.
Sept. 24, 2006
WACO, Texas -
After an afternoon thunderstorm passed through Waco on Saturday afternoon delaying play, Baylor senior netter Michal Kokta advanced to the semifinals of the sixth annual Baylor HEB Intercollegiate at the Baylor Tennis Center. Kokta is the only Baylor player left in the tournament and hopes to become the fifth Baylor champion in the tournament's six seasons.
UTA's Andy Leber claimed the singles championship the first year of the tournament but a Baylor player has won the title five straight years. Benedikt Dorsch won in 2002 and `03, current senior Matija Zgaga triumphed in 2004 and Lars Poerschke, a junior this season, claimed the 2005 crown.
In order to advance to the finals, Kokta has to get past Georgia Tech's David North who defeated Baylor freshman Denes Lukacs in the quarterfinals in three sets. Kokta advanced to the semifinals with a three-set victory over 63rd-ranked Adam Holmstrom of Denver who had eliminated No. 7 Arnau Brugues of Tulsa in the round of 16. Ole Miss' Erling Tveit,, ranked No. 8, already has a place in the finals after his teammate Robbye Poole defaulted their semifinal match.
Play will resume on Sunday at the Baylor Tennis Center at 8 a.m.
Complete results will be made available on www.baylorbears.com at the end of each day's competition.
