TULSA, Okla. - Three of Baylor's four singles players in the qualifying draw won round of 128 matches on Monday at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships at the University of Tulsa's Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Junior Matt Brown made quick work of Tulsa's Albert Jou, defeating him 6-0, 6-1. Brown will now take on ninth-seeded Benjamin Carlotti of North Carolina, a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Oklahoma's Federico Chavarria.
Although he lost his first set, sophomore Denes Lukacs rebounded and posted a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Enrique Olivares of East Tennessee State. Lukacs' next opponent will be Amrit Narashimham of Memphis. Narashimham won the right to face Lukacs with a straight-sets win over Jeremy Sonkin of Wisconsin.
Freshman Jordan Rux faced Johnny Parkes of New Mexico and downed the Lobo despite dropping the first set 6-1. Rux won the next two sets 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the round of 64 where he will take on SMU's Ralph Knupfer. Knupfer posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Jason McNaughton of Southern California.
Baylor's lone loser on the day was sophomore Dominik Mueller when he fell to Sebastian Serrano of East Tennessee State, 6-4, 6-2.
Doubles tandem's begin play in the round of 64 on Tuesday and two Baylor duos are set to compete. David Galic and Rux will team up to take on Southern California's Jack Levis and Gary Sacks, while Brown and Mueller will take on the draw's No. 4 seed, Sam Chang and Maciek Sykut of Florida State.
The Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Tennis Championships offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the 2007-08 collegiate tennis season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the third event is the season-ending NCAA Championships in May.
This year's event is being hosted by the University of Tulsa for the third straight time, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center - site of the 2004 and 2008 NCAA Championships.
