Freshman Lars Behlen advanced to the third round in the pre-qualifying draw of the ITA Men's All-American Championships at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla., on Saturday.
Behlen did not even have to step on the court to move on to the tournament's third round. He had a bye in the first round and his second-round opponent withdrew from the tournament. Behlen needs two wins on Sunday to be one of 16 players to advance to the 128-player qualifying draw. Behlen's third-round opponent will be Juan Diego Cuadrado of Bradley. The match is slated to begin at 8 a.m.
In other action in the 256-player pre-qualifying draw freshman Robbie Korth and sophomore Robert Verzaal also drew first-round byes. However, the duo would not advance past the second round. Playing Texas A&M's Jeremy Efferding, Verzaal took the first set 6-3 but dropped the final two 6-3, 6-2 to end his tourney run. Korth lost to Will Vasos of Iowa, 6-1, 6-1.
The Bears already have two players starting in the qualifying draw as freshmen Marko Krickovic and Mate Zsiga were selected. Zsiga, playing in his first collegiate competition, won the singles championship of the Baylor Invitational and boasts a 6-0 mark, while Krickovic was defeated in round of 16 play and enters the Championships with a 2-1 record. The qualifying draw will begin on Mon., Oct. 3; players must win three rounds to advance to the main draw.
Baylor will have at least one competitor in the singles main draw as 43rd-ranked Roberto Maytin earned one of 22 at-large selections into the 64-player field. The main draw will start on Thurs., Oct. 6.
The Bears have one doubles tandem competing. Maytin and Krickovic, ranked No. 23 nationally, were selected to the tournament's main draw. The duo won the doubles championship of the Baylor-HEB Invitational
