TULSA, Okla. - Senior Attila Bucko (Wellington, Fla.) was victorious in his first-round match of the qualifying draw of the D'Novo All-American Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla., on Monday. However, sophomore teammate Julian Bley fell in opening round action at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
The D'Novo All-American Tennis Championships, held for the third straight year in Tulsa, entails five days of qualifying events. It began with a 256-player pre-qualifying singles tournament on Oct. 3-4. The top 16 pre-qualifiers fed into the 128-player qualifying tournament on Oct. 5-7, which then feeds 16 players into the 64-player main draw on Oct. 8-11.
Bucko, ranked 85th in the ITA preseason rankings, took down 102nd-ranked Anton Stryhas, of Sacramento State in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to advance. The Baylor senior will now take on South Florida's Wael Kilani in the round of 64 on Tuesday. Kilani is the qualifying draw's No. 24 seed and the 73rd-ranked player in the ITA listings. Kilani defeated Oklahoma State's Aleksey Bessonov 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 to advance to the round of 64.
"Attila competed very well today and he handled the ups and downs of the match very well and hung in there at the crucial moments," men's tennis assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "With Attila is not as much about the opponent, it is more important for him to stay grounded and stay emotionally stable. If he does those things, he can hang with any player in this tournament."
Bley, a native of Veitshoechheim, Germany, lost to UNLV's Mehdi Bouras in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Following the opening round loss, Bley, the 113th-ranked player in preseason rankings, will play a consolation match tomorrow.
"Julian is still trying to implement a little more offense into his game," Brandi said. "Obviously that is an ongoing process. Playing more offense has its growing pains; he has to stick with it and keep battling through the tough moments. Hopefully, tomorrow he can play a little more solid all the way throughout."
On Thursday, Oct. 8, Baylor junior Jordan Rux will begin play in the main draw.
