Tulsa, Okla.- The second Baylor men's tennis player in as many days was eliminated from the D'Novo ITA All-American Championships Tuesday when senior Attila Bucko fell to Wael Kilani of South Florida at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
With the 6-3, 6-3 loss Bucko, the 85th-ranked player in the ITA preseason rankings, fell to 5-4 on the young season. Kilani was the qualifying draw's No. 24 seed and the 73rd-ranked player in the ITA listings.
"Attila didn't do a good enough job of playing his game, which is trying to impose his size on an opponent," assistant men's tennis coach Chris Brandi said. "He let the opponent draw him into his game and that guy (Kilani) is a really good defender, really good mover and grinder. Attila just played a little too passive."
The D'Novo All-American Tennis Championships, held for the third straight year in Tulsa, entails five days of qualifying events. It began with a 256-player pre-qualifying singles tournament on Oct. 3-4. The top 16 pre-qualifiers fed into the 128-player qualifying tournament on Oct. 5-7, which then feeds 16 players into the 64-player main draw on Oct. 8-11.
Bucko, a native of Wellington, Fla., advanced to face Kilani after taking down 102nd-ranked Anton Stryhas of Sacramento State yesterday in three sets 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 to advance.
Baylor's other qualifying draw participant Julian Bley, a native of Veitshoechheim, Germany, lost to UNLV's Mehdi Bouras in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2 yesterday. Bley was scheduled to play a consolation match today, but because of the rain the contest was canceled.
On Thursday, Oct. 8, Baylor junior Jordan Rux will begin play in the main draw. Rux is 6-0 on the season after winning the HEB Baylor Intercollegiate last weekend. Rux is ranked 27th in the ITA preseason rankings.
