Freshmen Markus Hornung and Benni Becker each won their singles matches on Tuesday in the first round of the qualifying singles of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men's All-American Championships in Lincoln Tennis Center. Later they combined to win their doubles match and move on the the qualifying round.
Hornung, playing his sixth match in five days, defeated Illinois' Michael Calkins, 6-3, 6-3, to move into the qualifying round. He will take on Guillaume Bouvier of Boise State on Wednesday. Becker, also playing an Illinois netter, defeated Nathan Zeder in a three set match, 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-2. Becker will take on Duke's Mike Yani on Wednesday. Winners of Wednesday's matches will advance to the Main Draw which will be held from Oct. 11-14.
Becker and Hornung were equally as successful in doubles as they teamed up to beat Florida State's Romain and Luscan, 9-7. The freshmen will play Texas' Haymond and Jenkins in the qualifying round on Wednesday.
Sophomores Reiner Neurohr and Matias Marin and junior Zoltan Papp lost their singles matches. Neurohr, the qualifying draw's No. 12 seed, dropped his match against Oliver Foreman of Middle Tennessee State, 6-3, 6-1. Marin was defeated by the No. 16 seed Lassi Ketola of UCLA, 6-4, 6-4, and Papp lost to Xavier Luscan of Florida State, the No. 14 seed, 6-3, 6-3. In doubles Marin and sophomore Cory Ross lost to Georgia Tech's Nott and Schnugg, 8-5, and Neurohr and Papp dropped a decision to Rea and Simon of Tennessee, 8-4.
