MANSFIELD, Texas - Both Baylor men's tennis players Marko Krickovic and Mate Zsiga lost their second round matches in the qualifying tournament at the USTA Pro Circuit's Futures of Mansfield event at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas Sunday.
After an impressive win yesterday, Krickovic faced a challenge in opponent Bjorn Fratangelo, the second seed of the qualifying tournament, losing 6-2, 6-1.
"I thought Marko played a strong opponent. He was extremely competitive and wasn't given a lot of chances to get into the match," said head coach Matt Knoll. "The guy (Fratangelo) was very confident. Marko also didn't serve very well. The good thing about these matches is that he learned a lot and realized that he has a lot of things to do better. I know he is looking forward to next week's tournament up in Fort Worth."
Zsiga also was defeated in his second-round matchup with 12th-seeded Tyler Hochwalt, 6-4, 6-2.
"Mate also played a very strong opponent. (Hochwalt) was a very aggressive player," said Knoll. "He played flat and fast. He had a great serve which helped him dictate the match. Throughout the match he was on top of Mate and never gave him a chance to get into the match. Mate saw a new style of play today which is good for him to get used to for the future."
Both the singles and doubles main draw will start Tuesday, Oct. 16. Baylor freshman Julian Lenz will compete in the wild card position in the singles. He also will see action in the doubles main draw as he will be partnered up with teammate Robert Verzaal for the first time.
