FORT WORTH, Texas - After winning five consecutive matches in straight sets, Baylor men's tennis freshman Julian Lenz was beaten in straight sets in the USTA/ITA Regional Championships singles final on Tuesday at the Bayard Friedman Tennis Center.
"Julian has made a lot of improvements in his game," head coach Matt Knoll said. "I think he had a really good tournament and was able to show that."
Lenz seeded 14th-seeded in the 128-player singles draw came up one win shy of earning an automatic bid into next month's USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships. He was bested by third-seeded and 46th-ranked Daniel Whitehead of Texas, 6-4, 6-4.
"Today, Julian just wasn't where he needed to be psychically," Knoll said. "You have to give the opponent credit. He executed well and we just weren't good enough today."
Lenz falls to 10-3 on the season and 2-2 against ranked players, after a 5-1 record in four days of play in the event.
Baylor players who are selected will be in action at next month's USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships in New York, New York starting on Nov. 8. Other student-athletes will travel to the Southern California Intercollegiate Championships that same week.
"We have a long way to go," Knoll said. "It is just a matter of staying the course and chopping wood every day to get better one day at a time. We are very optimistic about where we are going with this team and I think we are right on track."
