COLUMBUS, Ohio -
Sophomore Denes Lukacs saw his 10-match win streak come to a halt when he lost in round of 32 action in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday at the Racquet Club of Columbus in Columbus, Ohio. The Eger, Hungary native had qualified for the prestigious event by winning the singles championship of the ITA South Central Regional in Austin, Texas.
On a day that turned out not to be good day for the top seeds, Lukacs fought valiantly to pull off an upset as well. Top-ranked Somdev Devvarman and No.4 Greg Ouellette from Florida were the only two seeded players to survive the first round. Second-seeded Travis Helgeson from Georgia, No.3 Robert Farah from USC, No. 5 Bryan Koniecko from Ohio State, No. 6 Erling Tveit from Mississippi, No.7 Luke Shields from Boise State, and No.8 Andre Begemann from Pepperdine all suffered first round upsets.
The 78th-ranked Lukacs lost a three-set match to 35th-ranked Michael James of Penn State. Lukacs won the first set 6-3 but James took the next two by identical 6-4 scores. He will continue play on Friday as he meets up with sixth-seeded Erling Tveit of Mississippi in consolation action.
Lukacs's fall singles record now stands at 16-3.
In addition, sophomore Attila Bucko will be Baylor's lone entrant in this weekend's Texas Invitational in Austin. Bucko enters the singles draw as the No. 4 seed. He will play the winner of the Brett Powers (St. Edwards)/Romeo Mortera (Oregon) at 12:10 p.m. on Friday.
All Baylor results will be posted at www.BaylorBears.com at the end of each day's competition.
