INDIAN WELLS, Calif. – Baylor men’s tennis had a successful opening day to open the 2017 Oracle ITA Fall National Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. Wednesday.
In singles, No. 40 and eighth-seeded Johannes Schretter came out on top of a three-set thriller against Mississippi State’s Giovanni Oradini, prevailing 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(7) in the opening round. Then, Bjoern Petersen earned his first singles victory of the season with a straight-set victory over 14th-seeded Wayne Montgomery of Georgia, 6-4, 6-3.
The lone loss on the day came from No. 68 Jimmy Bendeck as he dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision to seventh-seeded Constantin Schmitz of Tulane.
In doubles, the second-seeded duo of Schretter and Will Little rolled to a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Oregon’s Cormac Clissold and Thomas Laurent.
In the singles round of 32, Schretter meets Virginia’s Aswin Lizen Thursday at 1:30 p.m. CT while Petersen faces Tennessee’s Timo Stodder at 3:30 p.m. CT. Moving into the consolation bracket, Bendeck will play Mohanad Al Houni of Gustavus Adolphus at 1:15 p.m. CT.
In doubles, Petersen and Little match up against Mississippi State’s Niclas Braun and Trevor Foshey. Time is TBD.
