Junior Denes Lukacs was victorious in first-round action in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Thursday at The Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va. Lukacs, an at-large selection and the tournament's No. 2 seed, moved on to the round of 16 with the win.
Lukacs, ranked No. 2 and one of 29 ranked players participating in the tournament, downed 125th-ranked Matt Hogan of Arkansas in the round of 32. The victory now pits him against Steven Moneke of Ohio State. Moneke, ranked No. 11 nationally, downed Tennessee's John Patrick Smith in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
Lukacs produced almost identical scores to Moneke in his victory over Hogan. The first set was a tight one, going to a tiebreak. Lukacs prevailed 7-4 in the tiebreaker to take the first set, 7-6 (4). Second set action moved along quicker with Lukacs taking a 6-2 victory to claim the match.
These ITA championships include qualifiers from the Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country during October, the ITA National Small College champions, the winners of the D'Novo/ITA Men's All-American Tennis Championships and Riviera/ITA Women's All-American Championships, and at-large and wild card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 10,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the Wilson/ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships. Past participants include current professionals Benjamin Becker (Baylor), James Blake (Harvard), Bob and Mike Bryan (Stanford), John Isner (Georgia), Kevin Kim (UCLA), and Todd Martin (Northwestern).
