NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After falling in his opening round match, Thursday, at the ITA National Indoor Championships junior Jordan Rux (Kerrville, Texas) responded Friday with a dominating 6-1, 6-2 win over Scen Vloedgraven of Binghamton.
The championships are hosted by Yale University at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
Rux, seeded fourth in the consolation bracket, moved his fall record to 11-3 and improved his indoor record this season to 2-1. Rux, ranked No. 27 in the ITA's preseason listings, jumped out in front of Vloedgraven in both sets and did not loot back cruising to the straight sets victory.
"Today, Jordan played the way he is capable of playing," men's tennis assistant coach Chris Brandi said. "He did a great job of imposing his size and athleticism on his opponent and that is exactly the way we hoped to see Jordan playing and that is the way he is capable of competing."
The win pushes Rux into the second round of play in the consolation bracket where he will face John Huang of Yale at 10:30 a.m. (EST) on Saturday. Huang won his opening round match in the 16-player consolation bracket over Amit Inbar of UCLA 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Huang is not ranked in the ITA preseason rankings.
If Rux wins the second round consolation match he will play the winner of Texas' Ed Corrie and Kentucky's Eric Quigley in third round action at 3:30 p.m. (EST) on Saturday.
Rux was sent to the consolation bracket after losing his opening round match at the championships to Jamere Jenkins of Virginia 6-3, 6-2. Baylor's lone participant in the tournament entered as one of 12 at-large bids competing against the 12 regional champions, the four All-American semifinalists, two host wildcards, one super bowl champion from the Small College Championships and one ITA wildcard.
Huang is one of the two host wildcards that was selected by Yale to compete in the 32-player singles draw. Of those 32 singles participants 25 are ranked in the ITA preseason rankings. Among those 25 ranked players are the No. 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6 players in the listings.
The Bears have had a representative in ITA Indoor Championships every year since 2001.
