FLUSHING, N.Y. - By way of a three-set loss, Baylor men's tennis freshman Julian Lenz was knocked out of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Friday at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.
Lenz jumped ahead of Pepperdine's third-ranked Sebastian Fanselow with a 6-4 win in the first set. However, the senior star for the Waves came back to win the next two sets, 6-4, 6-3, to take the match.
"Julian did pretty much what he did yesterday," assistant coach Dominik Mueller said. "He was focused and executed the game plan. Unfortunately, he could only do that for a set and a half today. He just wasn't able to finish the match. However, in the third set Fanselow played really well."
Lenz is now 11-4 on the year and 3-4 vs. ranked opponents.
In the first round, Lenz had faced the 101st-ranked Florent Diep of Florida and pulled off a victory in two sets 6-2, 6-4.
"I think this was a great experience for Julian," Mueller said. "It is great for a freshman to come to play against this field and see where he is compared to all of the other elite college players."
The loss wraps up the fall season for Baylor. The Bears will open dual-match action on Jan. 12 in a road match vs. Hawai'i.
