Baylor Men’s Tennis Heads to Sherwood Collegiate Cup

WACO, Texas – All nine players from the 11th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team will open their 2018 spring season at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup Friday through Monday at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Baylor is playing at the Sherwood Country Club for the ninth consecutive year and has placed nine singles players and four doubles teams in the 32-man singles and 16-pairing doubles draws. The Bears have two seeded singles players in top-seed and No. 11 Johannes Schretter along with third-seeded and No. 64 Bjoern Petersen. BU has one seeded doubles tandem in fourth-seeded Schretter and Roy Smith.

This year's field includes three other powerhouse collegiate tennis programs with representatives from USC, UCLA and Stanford, which are ranked in the ITA preseason poll at No. 5, 6, and 13 respectively.

The eight Baylor players are slated to begin their tournament run on Friday morning in the round of 32 starting at 11 a.m. CT, highlighted by Schretter taking on Jack Barber or Sam Turchetta of Stanford. Other opening matches for the Bears include junior Jimmy Bendeck against eighth-seeded Maxime Cressy of UCLA and freshman Sven Lah taking on Stanford’s Sameer Kumar.

Meanwhile, freshman Matias Soto meets Bruce Pereira of UCLA, sophomore Constantin Frantzen plays Stanford’s David Wilczynski, freshman Akos Kotorman battles UCLA’s sixth-seeded and No. 108 Keegan Smith, Petersen squares off against Stanford’s Michael Genender and redshirt junior Will Little squares off against seventh-seeded Jack Jaede of USC. In the final opening match of the day, freshman Roy Smith matches up against UCLA’s Connor Hance.

Second round action in the singles draw is also scheduled to be played Friday afternoon with the first matches set to begin. A consolation draw will be played following the conclusion of the first round. The quarterfinals will be played on Saturday, followed by the semifinals on Sunday and final on Monday.

Doubles competition will begin on Saturday morning with the round of 16. Baylor will have four teams competing in the doubles draw beginning with fourth-seeded Schretter and Smith teaming up against UCLA’s Hance and Connor Rapp. Bendeck and Frantzen will pair together to face UCLA’s Pereira and Cressy.

Meanwhile, Lah and Little team up to battle Stanford’s Tom Fawcett and Timothy Sah. BU's final pairing of Petersen and Kotorman will partner to face USC’s Henry Ji and Jens Sweaney. The quarterfinal round will be played on Saturday afternoon, followed by the semifinals and final on Sunday and Monday, respectively.

Following this weekend's tournament, the Bears will return to Waco to begin their 2018 dual-match season with a doubleheader against UMKC on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. CT, respectively.
