WACO, Texas- The sixth-ranked men's tennis team will kickoff its 2010 spring schedule by sending seven players to this weekend's Sherwood Collegiate Cup at the Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, Calif., Jan. 15-17. The event will feature a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles bracket.

Only players from Baylor, No. 1 USC, No. 4 UCLA and No. 9 Stanford are invited to participate at the event.

"Well, what a great tournament, a chance to play with USC, UCLA and Stanford in a great setting," said head coach Matt Knoll. "Sherwood is a beautiful place and I can't think of a better way to kick off the year."

The Bears will be playing in the tournament for the eighth time in nine years after not participating in the tournament last year. In the past Baylor has had success in the event including the 2008 singles champion in Lars Poerschke and the 2008 doubles champions in Attila Bucko and Denes Lukacs, as well as the 2006 singles championship won by former Bear Matija Zgaga.

Accompanying Knoll and assistant coach Chris Brandi to the tournament will be Julian Bley, Attila Bucko, Denes Lukacs, Dominik Mueller, Sergio Ramirez, Jordan Rux and Maros Horny.

"To just get some match play in at such a high level really is special for us," Knoll said. "We really are excited Sherwood has invited us to come out and I think we are going to have real growth this weekend."

Bley, a sophomore, will be making his first trip to the southern California tournament after posting a 4-6 in fall play. For seniors Bucko, Lukacs, Mueller and junior Rux it will be the second time to participate at the Sherwood event. Bucko went 8-6 in fall play, while Lukacs and Mueller did not participate in any fall events for Baylor. Rux, No. 11 in the ITA singles rankings, had the most successful fall season of any Baylor player finishing 12-4. Junior transfer Ramirez, who did not play during the fall season, and sophomore Horny, who went 5-5 in fall play, will be traveling to the Sherwood Cup for the first time.

Draws are still being finalized, but besides all of the Bears participating in singles action Lukacs and Horny, Mueller and Ramirez, and Rux and Bucko will play as duos in the doubles draw.

At the end of each day of competition results and a recap will be posted on this Web site.
