WACO, Texas -
Baylor's men's tennis team will take on the 62nd- ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Islanders on Sunday, Feb. 4 at 2 p.m. in the Bears' fifth match of the spring season. The contest is Baylor's last match before traveling to Chicago for the 2009 ITA National Indoor Championship on Feb. 13.
"I think we want to see that we have improved, we want to see that we have a better understanding of our game style, we have an enhanced ability to be bold under pressure and go for our shots and have a comfort level when things are close," head coach Matt Knoll said. "Texas A&M Corpus is a NCAA tournament team that will win their conference again, that will push us. It is really a perfect opportunity for us to continue to build on what we did last weekend and get ready to go to the Indoor."
Baylor is 7-6 all-time versus the Islanders, but the Bears have won the last seven matches dating back to 2002, including last season's 6-1 victory in Waco.
The Bears (3-1) have won two straight home matches over ranked opponents, No. 67 Utah, 7-0, and No. 58 Georgia Tech, 6-1, after falling to 10th-ranked Florida 7-0 in Gainesville and defeating No. 43 SMU, 4-3, in Dallas to begin the season.
Baylor goes into Sunday's match having won the doubles point in each of its last two contests, with the pair of Maros Horny and Dominik Mueller and the tandem of Julian Bley and Attila Bucko each sporting two-match win streaks.
In singles, sophomore Jordan Rux, leads the Bears with a ranking of No. 13, and a 3-1 record in the spring season. ITA All-American Denes Lukacs, a junior, follows at No. 21 with a 2-2 record thus far, while junior Attila Bucko is No. 40 and 2-2, and junior Dominik Mueller ranks No. 72 and is 2-1. Freshmen Horny and Bley are 2-1 and 3-1, respectively.
The Texas A&M-Corpus Christi men's tennis team counters with a 1-2 record and will play two matches on Friday before Sunday's meeting with the Bears. First the Islanders will meet Nebraska in San Antonio for a 10 a.m. match, followed by a home contest versus Texas Pan-American on Friday evening at 6 p.m.
"We know they are going to be competitive at every position so we will have to be ready and play some good tennis," Knoll said.
The Islanders' three matches thus far in the spring season have all been against ranked opponents. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi has lost to No. 42 New Mexico, 4-2, downed No. 44 Indiana, 4-3, after opening with a 4-3 loss to No. 75 Radford. All three opponents participated in the NCAA Championship a season ago.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi counters Baylor's lineup with the reigning Southland Conference Player of the Week, Laurent Montoisy, who is 3-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles competition in the dual match season. Montoisy has previously been named the SLC Freshman of the Year last season and finished runner-up in voting for the conference MVP.
