WACO, Texas - The sixth-ranked Baylor men's tennis team will return to action Tuesday when it faces the University of Texas-Pan American Broncs at 3 p.m. at the Baylor Tennis Center.
The match was originally scheduled to take place last Wednesday, but had to be pushed back twice due to inclement weather.
On Tuesday, Baylor will play its fifth straight match at home and will look to extend its 11-match home win streak. Overall, the Bears have won 19 of their last 20 matches dating back to last season.
Individually, Baylor is led by senior Denes Lukacs who has a perfect 4-0 record to start the dual match season. The Eger, Hungary native has now won 19 of his last 22 matches. The 11th-ranked Jordan Rux at the No. 2 spot and Attila Bucko at the No. 3 position also have unblemished 4-0 records.
In doubles, the Bears have been experimenting with player combinations and have played eight different doubles tandems in the first four matches of the season. The pairing of Attila Bucko and Serigo Ramirez have gone 2-0 in the last two matches at the No. 3 spot while Lukacs and Maros Horny are 2-1 on the young season.
The Broncs come into the match looking for their first win of the season after dropping their first four matches. UTPA has lost to No. 12 Texas A&M, 6-1, No. 38 TCU, 4-3, 68th-ranked SMU, 5-2 and UTSA, 4-3.
First year head coach Chris Taylor leads a Broncs roster tha features two seniors, three juniors and two sophomores and is coming off a 5-13 campaign last season. Junior Ashwin Vijayaragavan leads UTPA at the No. 1 singles slot and has compiled a 3-1 record to start the season. The Broncs No. 1 doubles tandem is a pair of brothers, Beau and Brett Bernstein, who have tallied a 2-2 record so far.
The Bears and Broncs have not met since 2002 when Baylor won all of the doubles points and all of the singles matches to sweep UTPA 7-0. Baylor also beat UT-Pan Am in Matt Knoll's first year at Baylor in 1997, 7-0. Overall, the Bears have won five straight from the Broncs, but the overall series is tied at 10 wins apiece.
