WACO, Texas - Baylor's ninth-ranked men's tennis team travels to the state of Virginia this weekend for two matches. The Bears will face top-ranked and undefeated Virginia at 1 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, March 1 and No. 21 Virginia Commonwealth on Sunday, March 2 at 10 a.m. (CT).
The Virginia-Baylor match will be broadcast on the internet at ACCSelect.com for a nominal fee ($4.99). It will be available for on-demand viewing shortly after the event.
The Bears, 9-3 on the season, are coming off a 4-2 home loss at the hands on second-ranked Ohio State. Baylor not only lost the match but lost its top player, two-time All-American Lars Poerschke, during the competition. Poerschke, a senior, led, 6-1, 3-1, in his match at No. 1 singles when he sprained his ankle while going for a passing shot. He will be sidelined for three weeks. Sophomores Denes Lukacs and Dominik Mueller posted singles victories for Baylor while Mueller and Attila Bucko and Poerschke and Lukacs earned the doubles point for the Bears.
Virginia will be hosting two Big 12 Conference opponents this weekend as fifth-ranked Texas takes on the Cavaliers on Friday night. The Cavaliers, 13-0 on the season, boast four ranked singles players and three ranked doubles teams: (1) Somdev Devvarman, (5) Dom Inglot, (52) Treat Huey, (76) Ted Angelinos, (1) Devvarman/Huey, (18) Houston Barrick/Inglot and (19) Michael Shabaz/Sanam Singh.
Virginia Commonwealth enters Sunday's match with a 9-2 record. It's two losses this season have come against No. 1 Virginia, 7-0, and No. 8 North Carolina, 4-1.
Baylor owns a 3-1 series lead over the Cavaliers and is a perfect 4-0 against Virginia Commonwealth.
