WACO, Texas - The 12th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team (9-4) will compete in the inaugural Oracle Collegiate Tennis Challenge at the 2014 BNP Paribas Open on Saturday and Sunday in Indian Wells, Calif.
Baylor is one of four teams selected to participate in the event and will play in two matches with the first being against No. 20 California on Saturday followed by a match with No. 6 Illinois on Sunday. Both matches will begin at 11 a.m. CT.
The Bears enter the weekend following a signature win on the road against No. 3 UCLA on Wednesday. In the match, junior Julian Lenz upset top-ranked Clay Thompson to secure the 4-2 victory.
The University of California has an 8-2 record on the season, following a 4-3 win over No. 43 TCU. The Golden Bears have four singles competitors ranked including Campbell Johnson, Ben McLachan, Andre Goransson and Filip Bergevi who are ranked 81, 84, 113 and 117, respectively. Baylor leads in the all-time series against the Golden Bears 3-2 with the last meeting resulting in a Cal victory in Waco last season.
"Cal is a nationally competitive program," Knoll said. "They have done a great job for a while. We have played them a bunch of times and we have won some and lost some. We know that they are going to be incredibly tough."
Sixth-ranked Illinois enters the weekend touting a 9-4 record. The Illini also have three singles competitors ranked in the ITA poll including Jared Hiltzik, Farris Gosea and Tim Kopinski who are ranked No. 7, 17 and 42 respectively. Baylor currently trails Illinois 4-3 in the all-time series record with the last meeting resulting in an Illini win in 2009.
Following Sunday's match, the Bears will return to Waco to face No. 31 Tulsa on Friday, March 21.
