The 29th-ranked Baylor men's tennis team (12-4) will host No. 24 California (8-6) Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center. The meeting will mark the sixth time this season the Bears have faced a top-25 opponent.
"We know they are really good," head coach Matt Knoll said. "They beat us last year out there. They have a great team and are having a great season. I know that they just beat Duke. They are going to be tough. It is going to be a big step up for us and we are going to have to play a lot better."
The Bears are 9-2 at home this season and have four singles competitors ranked in the latest ITA ranking. Julian Lenz, Patrick Pradella, Marko Krickovic, and Mate Zsiga are ranked 49, 64, 97 and 98 respectively.
Pradella is 12-3 in dual-match play and has won three straight matches. Tony Lupieri has given the Bears a solid presence in the middle of the lineup with four straight wins to have an 11-3 dual-match record.
California is coming off a 4-3 victory at 36th-ranked TCU.
The Golden Bears have two singles competitors ranked, Campbell Johnson is No. 47 and Ben McLachlan is listed at No. 57. Cal also has three doubles pairs ranked No. 33, 42, and 45.
Baylor currently leads in the overall series with California 3-1 with the last meeting resulting in a 4-3 loss for Baylor on Feb. 27, 2012.
Following Tuesday's match, the Bears will host 37th-ranked Memphis on Thursday before they travel to Lubbock to start the Big 12 season against Texas Tech on Sun., April 7.
