WACO, Texas - Baylor's men's tennis team opens its Big 12 Conference play at its Hurd Tennis Center when they host Texas Tech on Saturday, March 31 at 6 p.m.

Baylor and Texas Tech were ranked fourth and fifth, respectively in the Big 12 Conference Coaches' Poll that was released earlier this week. The Bears, ranked No. 29, enter the contest with a 12-7 season record while the 30th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders are 11-6 overall. Baylor and Texas Tech are tied in the series at 25-25 but the Bears are 18-0 under head coach Matt Knoll vs. Texas Tech.

"The team is looking forward to the big challenges presented by Big 12 play. Texas Tech has a super-talented and experienced group of seniors that will be tough to handle," said Knoll.

Baylor is led on the season by 21st-ranked freshman Mate Zsiga's 28-4 season mark; he is 14-1 in dual match play which includes an upset of fifth-ranked Eric Quigley of Kentucky. Zsiga has won a team-best nine straight matches. Junior Roberto Maytin, BU's other ranked singles player at No. 87, owns the team's second-best singles record at 19-12. Maytin and freshman Marko Krickovic are ranked No. 42 in doubles with a 5-2 record, but haven't played dual match competition together yet.

Texas Tech is led by two ranked singles players and two rated doubles teams. Senior Gonzalo Escobar is the Red Raiders' top-ranked player at No. 57. He is 25-10 overall and 11-6 in dual match play. Raony Carvalho, a senior, is ranked No. 96 with an 11-5 season mark and a 10-4 dual match record. Escobar and Carvalho combine to rank No. 28 in doubles with a 6-0 record, all in dual match play. Carvalho and Garcia are ranked No. 70 in doubles.
