Baylor's Mate Zsiga has been named Big 12 Player of the Week for men's tennis the conference office announced today. Zsiga, a freshman, was undefeated in singles and doubles matches from April 2-8.
The honor marks the first career award for Zsiga, he is the first male freshman to win the award since Texas' Kellen Damico took the honor on March 31, 2008.
Zsiga helped 32nd-ranked Baylor (13-8, 1-1) upset No. 15 Texas, 5-2, in Waco on Wednesday. He raised his singles record to 29-5, including 15-2 in dual match play, with a straight-set win at No. 1 singles over Texas' 64th-ranked Soren Hess-Olesen, 6-4, 6-0.
Zsiga and his doubles partner, another freshman Diego Galeano, raised their record to 4-0 as a doubles tandem with an upset of 27th-ranked Chris Camillone and David Holiner, 8-3. Zsiga and Galeano were playing No. 1 doubles for the first time this season.
Currently, the Szeged, Hungary-native is ranked No. 21 in the nation with a 6-2 record against nationally-ranked opponents in dual-match play.
The Bears return to action on Wednesday, April 11 when they host 24th-ranked Tulsa at 6 p.m. at the Hurd Tennis Center. Baylor's two seniors, Julian Bley and Kike Grangeiro, will be honored.
