Baylor's Denes Lukacs and Jordan Rux both lost in the first round of the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships on Wednesday, May 20. Now, Rux and David Galic will begin doubles action on Thursday, when the 18th-ranked duo take on second-seeded Davey Sandgren and John-Patrick Smith of Tennessee.
Lukacs, ranked No. 4, dropped his round of 64 match in three sets. The junior All-American won the first set against South Carolina's Diego Cubas 6-2 but dropped the next two. In the second set, Lukacs fell behind 0-2 but won the next four games to go up 4-2. However, the 54th-ranked Cubas closed out the set, 6-4, by winning four straight games. In the third set both players held serve until the seventh game when Cubas went up a break. Both players then held serve enabling Cubas to win 6-4.
Lukacs' season ends with a team-high 31-9 singles record which includes a 19-8 mark versus ranked opponents. With his 110 career victories, Lukacs ranks No. 4 on Baylor's career singles wins list, behind Benjamin Becker (141), Lars Poerschke and Benedikt Dorsch with 119 each. In addition, Lukacs ranks No. 4 on BU's singles winning percentage list at 79.7 percent (110-28).
Rux, ranked No. 45, also won his first set and lost the next two when he faced 21st-ranked Alex Clayton of Stanford. Rux sprinted out to a 4-0 first-set lead but Clayton won three straight to pull to within one game at 4-3. Rux held served then broke Clayton's serve to win the first set 6-4. In the second set Rux again moved out to a 3-1 lead but lost six of the next eight games to fall to defeat, 7-5. In third-set action Rux fell behind 3-1 but rallied to move ahead 4-3 but couldn't hold it and eventually lost 6-4.
Rux, a sophomore from Kerrville, Texas, ends the season at 25-13 including an 11-9 record against ranked opponents.
