SKILLMAN, N.J. - Baylor men's tennis All-American Mate Zsiga and teammate Diego Galeano are among the top-125 singles players in college tennis, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings released on Friday.
Zsiga, who is coming off a season in which he posted a 36-9 record, is listed at No. 7 by the ITA. It is the highest preseason ranking for a singles player in the Baylor program since Denes Lukacs was No. 2 in 2008. Last season, Zsiga played all of his dual matches at the No. 1 spot in the lineup going 22-5 and 4-1 in Big 12 play. The Szeged, Hungary native was named the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned All-American honors after finishing at No. 17 in the final ITA singles rankings.
Galeano checks in at No. 110 on the preseason list, after going 14-8 in dual-match action for the Bears in the spring. The sophomore played positions two through five in the lineup with a combined 13-6 record at the No. 3 and 4 spots.
Newcomer Julian Lenz also represented Baylor in the ITA's Preseason Newcomer/Freshman Rankings at No. 9. The freshman comes to BU following a 2011 season in which he played all four of the junior grand slams. The Giessen, Germany product also won the 9th UAE Dubai ITF Junior Championships in 2010.
Besides the preseason rankings, the ITA also unveiled the field for the 2012 ITA Men's All-American Championships. Six Baylor players will take part in the singles action with Zsiga selected for the event's main draw, Galeano and Lenz competing in the qualifying draw and Marko Krickovic, Robbie Korth and Robert Verzaal playing in pre-qualifying action.
Zsiga and Lenz will team up to take part in the qualifying doubles draw.
The ITA Men's All-American will take place at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. for a sixth straight year. The tournament kicks off with prequalifying matches starting on September 29, while the main draw is set to begin on October 4.
