Tony Lupieri

Oct. 18, 2013

WACO, Texas - The Baylor men's tennis team will host 15 teams as part of the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships, Saturday through Tuesday, at the Hurd Tennis Center.

The tournament is one of 12 regionals held across the nation in October with the singles and doubles champion from each region qualifying for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York, Nov. 7-10.

The event will include a 128-player singles draw and a 64-team doubles draw. Action gets underway on Saturday at 8 a.m.

Competing for the Bears will be Diego Galeano, No. 79 Tony Lupieri, No. 60 Mate Zsiga, and Vince Schneider.

Zsiga (4-3) enters the weekend coming off a run to the main draw in the Futures of Mansfield $15K event. Zsiga fought his way into the main draw of that event by winning three straight matches in the qualifying draw.

Schneider (2-4), who also competed in the Mansfield event, comes into the regional having reached the second round of the main draw of the ITF event. After defeating Vasile-Alexandru Ghilea 6-0, 6-3 in his first round matchup, Schneider was unable to put away Australian Andrew Harris who advanced with a 6-3, 6-3 victory.

Galeano (5-2), will see his first action since Oct. 1, when he defeated No. 122 Sidharta Hazarika in a back draw matchup in the ITA All-American event in Tulsa, Okla.

The 79th-ranked Lupieri (4-1) will also be seeing his first action since Oct. 1. In his last appearance, Lupieri defeated Dylan McCloskey of Tulsa, also in a back draw matchup of the ITA All-American event.

In doubles action, Galeano and Zsiga will be paired together, while Lupieri and Schneider will play together for the first time.

Two Baylor players, No. 38 Julian Lenz and 16th-ranked Patrick Pradella will not compete in the event this weekend as they have already qualified for the National Indoor event by reaching the semifinal round of the ITA All-American Championships earlier this month.
