WACO, Texas -
The Baylor men's tennis team will travel to its second ITA event and fourth tournament of the fall as five players participate in the USTA/ITA Texas Regional Championships Oct. 20-23 at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center in Fort Worth, Texas.
"I am a lot more excited for this tournament than I have been previously this fall," head coach Matt Knoll said. "I feel like our guys are coming along well in their development and I think we will play pretty well."
The tournament is one of 12 regionals held across the nation in October with the singles and doubles champion from each region qualifying for the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 8-11 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, New York.
Competing for Baylor in the singles draw will be freshman Julian Lenz, sophomores Mate Zsiga, Marko Krickovic and Robbie Korth, and junior Robert Verzaal.
Zsiga comes in to the ITA event with the best singles record on the team at 7-1, while Lenz and Krickovic both sport a 5-2 record. Verzaal is 3-2, while Korth (0-1) will just be playing his second match of the season.
The Bears will have two tandems competing in the doubles draw with Krickovic and Verzaal pairing together and Lenz and Zsiga taking the court together. Krickovic and Verzaal are 9-3 on the year, while Lenz and Zsiga teamed up for the first time at the ITA All-American to go 3-2.
"In doubles, I am seeing some things that I like," Knoll said. "Julian and Mate were just a thrown together team at the ITA All-American and they have a chance to be a decent team now. Robert and Marko have played well this year and I think they will continue to grow in this tournament."
