Baylor's Acrobatics & Tumbling team opened its 2014 season with a loss to defending national champion Oregon, 280.2-274.38, at Matthew Knight Arena in Eugene, Ore., Thursday night.
Oregon began the night by claiming the Compulsory event 38.9-38.05. The Ducks extended their lead in the Acro event, scoring 28.45 to Baylor's 27.75. In the Pyramid, Baylor was only outscored by .6, 29.3 to 28.7. Going into halftime, Oregon led the Bears 96.65-94.5.
After the half, the Ducks extended their lead by taking the Toss event, outscoring Baylor 29.05 to 28.45. In the Tumbling event, the Bears were able to win the duo and tie in the trio, but in the end, couldn't match Oregon's 57.1 while the Bears tallied 56.69.
In the final event of the night, the Team Routine, the Ducks out-matched the Bears, 97.4-94.74.
In the Tumbling event, the Bears were solid, even outscoring the Ducks, 9.65-9.6, in the duo heat and tying in the trio heat, 9.2-9.2.
Baylor was able to take heat one of the Acro event 9.45-9.35.
The Bears tied Oregon in heat 3 of the Toss event 9.75-9.75.
STAT OF THE DAY
Baylor's highest score of the night came in the pyramid heat of the Compulsory event with 9.9.
"We are really excited. The girls gave a great performance and showed tonight like we have been all week in practice," said head coach LaPrise Harris-Williams. "I'm really proud of how the girls pulled together, and we felt like we gave a good performance. We had some trouble in the team routine, but overall it was a really good night."
The Bears will travel next to Hamden, Conn., to take on the Quinnipiac Bobcats on Sunday, Feb. 23, at 11 a.m. (CT).
