WACO, Texas - Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling won its first home meet of the 2013 season against Azusa Pacific Tuesday night at the Ferrell Center. The Bears (266.84) made an astounding comeback after halftime to beat the Cougars (265.75).
"We're excited about the first big win," head coach LaPrise Harris-Williams said. "We're happy to be at home and to have a good crowd out tonight. It feels incredible."
Although Baylor won the meet, APU swept all three events prior to halftime. The Cougars outscored the Bears 36.90-36.80 in Compulsories, and widened the lead when they posted a 26.50 to Baylor's 23.70 in the Acro event. The Cougars took the Pyramid event as well, beating the Bears 28.6-27.7. APU entered halftime leading 92.00-88.20.
The Bears, however, returned from halftime as a new team. Baylor closed the gap by posting a 27.6 to APU's 27.2 in the Toss Event. The Bears went on to take the Tumbling Event as well, outscoring the Cougars 55.75-52.45. These two wins placed Baylor (171.55) within .10 of APU (171.65).
The final event, Team Routine, would determine the outcome of the meet.
APU gave a solid performance, but Baylor rallied and won the Team Routine 95.29-94.10. The Bears won the meet 266.84-265.75.
"We are a second half team," Harris-Williams said. "I told the girls to stay focused and not to worry about the scores at halftime. It paid off."
The Bears compete again when they travel to Eugene, Ore., to face the Ducks (1-0) on March 2. The next home meet is March 10, when Baylor hosts Quinnipiac (0-0) at the Ferrell Center. All NCATA events are sanctioned through USA Gymnastics.
