Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling (2-2) won their first meet of the season against its two opponents, the Cougars of Azusa Pacific and the Sea Warriors of Hawai'i Pacific at the Richard and Vivian Felix Event Center in Azusa, Calif., Tuesday evening.
The Bears started off the meet in second after the Compulsory event with a 36.6, with the Cougars taking the lead with a 37.35 and the Sea Warriors in third with a 36.5. After the Acro event, HPU came back strong to tie the Baylor for second with a 64.90, still trailing Azusa Pacific's 65.40. Going into the half after the Pyramid event, Azusa Pacific held on to their lead with a 94.80 followed by Baylor's 94.20 and Hawai'i Pacific's 94.10 in third.
After the half, Azusa Pacific came out strong in the Toss event, scoring a 123.95 followed by Baylor with a 123.15 and then Hawai'i Pacific with a 122.35. In the Tumbling event, Baylor remained behind the Cougars' 182.25 with a 180.95. The Sea Warriors remained in third with a 177.80.
In the final event of the meet, the Team Routine, the Bears pulled off the comeback scoring a 100.72, taking first with an overall total of 281.37. Azusa Pacific finished second just .27 behind Baylor with a 281.10, and Hawai'i Pacific placed third in the tri-meet with a 273.09.
The Bears' highest score of the night came in the Tumbling event's 6 element with a 9.90 from freshman Kiara Nowlin.
In the heat one Pyramid event, the team of Lynn Herbst, Courtney Pate, Katya Finta, Tori Jackson, Devyn White, Keegan Johnson, Bresha Pierce, Deonka Ceaser and Hannah Henke scored a 9.85.
In the Acro event's 6 element, the team of Bresha Pierce, Kelci Ortiz, Devyn White, Danielle Hardman and Ally Cheatham scored a 9.75, .3 more than Azusa's score and .35 more than Hawai'i Pacific's.
The Toss team of Lori Williamson, Lynn Herbst, Deonka Ceaser, Lindsey Lau and Ally Cheatham took the second heat of the Toss event with a 9.55.
STAT OF THE DAY
Baylor's 281.37 is the third highest total meet score in the history of the Baylor A&T behind 281.856 at Azusa Pacific (3/5/11) and 281.395 against Fairmont State and Quinnipiac (3/11/12).
"So proud of the collected effort from the entire team, we knew it would be a close competition, and each of our girls held their own," said head coach LaPrise Harris-Williams. "Stand outs tonight included senior Lori Williams and Katya Finta in the Toss event and Courtney Pate, Kaelyn Cowan and tumbling phenom Kiara Nowlin in the tumbling event. These two wins have given this team such needed boost."
The Bears will take to the mats at home for this first time this season for their second meet against the Oregon Ducks in the Ferrell Center on Saturday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. (CT).
