A&T's Nowlin Takes Home National Title

Freshman Kiara Nowlin won an individual national championship on Thursday.

Freshman Kiara Nowlinwon the team's only individual event title Thursday evening in the Tumbling Event's 6 Element& Tumbling's with the score of a perfect 10 at the Felix Event Center in Azusa, Calif.

The Bears, competing in the NCATA Championships, qualified a program-best 18 athletes to compete in eight events spanning Toss, Acro and Tumbling events. Baylor also had athletes qualify for each of the six Tumbling events.

After the Individual Event Championships ended, senior Lori Williamsonwas named to the NCATA 2014 All-American team which is comprised of 12 student-athletes from the competing schools. Williamson becomes Baylor's fifth NCATA All-American and the lone honoree in 2014.

With her win tin the Tumbling Six Element Event, Nowlin became the program's eighth individual national champion.

"Lori Williamson is by far one of the most versatile athletes on our team. Her ability to excel as a Top, Base and Tumbler makes her invaluable," said head coach LaPrise Harris-Williams. "She is an athlete that truly exhibits all the qualities representative of an NCATA All-American. There were more than 40 nominations submitted- 6 nominations from Baylor... I am honored to have Lori selected from this extraordinary group of young ladies."

"It it always pleasing to see a an athlete achieve success after working so hard to perfect a skill set," said Harris-Williams.  "I had to ask for an extra few minutes for Kiara to rest and get water since she was a double qualifier in the 6 element tumbling event, and required to tumble back to back passes. Her flawless performances tonight solidified her earning a perfect 10 and a national championship. She is the true model for Baylor A&T tumbling."

• In the Synchronized Toss Heat, Baylor tied for second with a score of 9.60.
• The Bears had a program-best 18 athletes compete in the Individual Event Championships.
• The Bears had athletes qualify for the Individual Finals in each of the six Tumbling events.

• Freshman Kiara Nowlinscored a perfect 10 in the Tumbling Event's Six Element, taking the individual national title.

The Bears (2-4) will take the mat in the NCATA National Championship Quarterfinals against #5 Fairmont State Falcons (7-2) Friday, August 25 at 2:45 p.m. (CT).
