A&T Claims Two NCATA Individual National Titles

HAMDEN, Conn. -Baylor Acrobatics & Tumbling claimed two National Collegiate Acrobatics & Tumbling Association (NCATA) Individual National Championship titles on Thursday evening at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. The Quinnipiac Bobcats began the three-day competition with Individual Events, and Baylor won national titles in two out of the six tumbling heats.

The Bears' first national title of the night was won in the second heat of the Tumbling event, Trio pass. The three-member team consisted of junior Hailey Cowan (Hewitt, Texas), freshman Courtney Pate (Belton, Texas) and senior Stephanie Bohmler (Seguin, Texas). Cowan, Pate and Bohmler posted a score of 9.10, followed by Quinnipiac's 8.85.

West Chicago, Ill., sophomore Keegan Johnson won a second national title for Baylor in the fourth heat of the Tumbling event, Aerial pass. Johnson gained the title with a score of 9.85, followed by Oregon's 9.80.

For the first time in NCATA history, Quinnipiac, Oregon and Azusa Pacific finished in a three-way tie in an event. All three teams earned a score of 9.85 in the second heat of the Pyramid event, the twisting pyramid, causing them to share the national title.

In addition to two national championship titles, four Baylor Bears were presented with NCATA individual honors as well. Cowan, Johnson and Bohmler were named 2013 NCATA All Americans. Junior Ginger Plemmons (China Spring, Texas) was also deemed the Academic Athlete of the Year.

The Oregon Ducks earned 12 national titles before Thursday night's end. Baylor and Quinnipiac followed with two, while Fairmont State and Azusa Pacific trailed with one.
