WACO, Texas -
Baylor Acrobatics and Tumbling head coach LaPrise Harris-Williams announced her squad's 2014 schedule Tuesday, marking its fourth year competing in the National Collegiate Acrobatics and Tumbling Association (NCATA). The Bears will compete in five regular season events, including two home events, before the NCATA National Championships.
"Our focus this year will be to perfect our technique and increase our skill level for all events," Harris-Williams said. "We have gotten off to a great start by implementing a more suitable strength training program to enhance our athletes' performance abilities. Our plan is to direct more attention to detail in order to decrease execution deductions and maximize our scoring ability."
With 22 of 24 letterwinners returning and 13 newcomers, Baylor will open the season with its first three competitions on the road starting Feb. 13 versus the reigning NCATA national champion Oregon in Eugene, Ore. The team will then travel to Hamden, Conn., on Feb. 23 to face Quinnipiac before finishing their road competitions with a tri-meet in Azusa, Calif., on March 18 against Azusa Pacific and Hawaii Pacific.
The Bears will make their home debut at the Ferrell Center on March 29 against Oregon and finish up the regular season on April 12 at home against Azusa Pacific.
"This year's squad is collectively the most talented yet, with our first true graduating senior class," Harris-Williams said. "We are counting on our returner's experience to guide our team from meet to meet, and expect our first year starters to highly contribute to increased scores. Last year we celebrated our national championships in the Tumbling Event, but our fifth place team ranking has motivated this team."
Last season the Bears finished 2-4 and were the No. 4 seed at the 2013 NCATA National Championships. The team captured two individual national titles; the trio pass comprised of Hailey Cowan, Courtney Pate and Stephanie Bohmler and in the aerial pass with Keegan Johnson. Cowan, Johnson and Bohmler were all named 2013 NCATA All-Americans.
The 2014 NCATA National Championships will take place April 24-26 in Azusa, Calif.
