The 2008-09 campaign marks Johnny Derrick's ninth season on the Lady Bear basketball staff. He joined the staff when current head coach Kim Mulkey took the reins of the Baylor program in 2000. Derrick served as an assistant coach for the first six seasons, which included both the Big 12 and NCAA National Championships in 2005. This season will be his second as of Director of Basketball Operations. "The expansion of our coaching staff allowed me to re-evaluate responsibilities. Coach Derrick had become our `go to' person. He has been involved in every aspect of the program, from day-to-day business to the long-term in game scheduling and recruiting," Mulkey said. "I greatly value Johnny's contributions to this program. He is my right hand," Mulkey added. Derrick continues to handle all of the business responsibilities for the program which includes management of the budget, opponent scheduling and team travel. "Even though I have many business and operational responsibilities, my focus still remains on the well being and success of our athletes," said Derrick. "Student athletes face many challenges each day. My goal is to assist them in finding solutions to their problems or answers to their questions. In many cases it is simply just being here to listen and to assure them that we truly care about them. Kim's philosophy from the first day we arrived at Baylor has been that the student athlete must be our top priority," said Derrick. "We demand the best from them in the classroom and on the court and I feel it is my responsibility to give them my utmost attention and support." Derrick also serves as the liaison between the Lady Bear staff and the Tip Off Club, the Lady Bear basketball support group. He has worked closely with booster clubs and coaching staffs at the collegiate level for many years and has used his experience to help the Tip Off Club grow in membership and involvement. "I am very proud of our Tip Off Club and the commitment they have made to Lady Bear Basketball. I consider them one of the premier support groups in the country," added Derrick. Since arriving in 2000, Derrick has played an integral part in the Lady Bears' success. "I will never forget the excitement of winning the NCAA championship. It was a very special feeling that few people have the opportunity to experience. Our staff continues our dedication to Lady Bear basketball as we strive to be one of the elite programs in the country year in and year out," Derrick said. Derrick is a native of Dubach, La., and currently lives in Waco. |
