No. 1/1 Baylor 92, No. 13/11 Oklahoma 70
Ferrell Center – Waco, Texas
February 2, 2011 - Att. 7,814

Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On the strong start…
“Well we were firing on all cylinders. When you can pass the ball around the way we did and hit shots from many places on the floor, you are going to have a good night. I just thought after the Texas A&M game, Brittney didn’t get enough touches but we had to do what we had to do survive there. I thought they listened and they responded. We had great ball reversal, a lot of people touched the ball, and it was just one of those nights where you are glad you could sit back as a coach and watch it. I thought Melissa Jones set the tone at the very beginning of the game with the three. I thought Brittney found players when she was double teamed, and we finished shots. I thought we had energy in transition, I thought Odyssey Sims was very challenged on the defensive end. There was a senior point guard on the other side, one of the very best in the league and you’re a freshman and you want to do for your team what Danielle (Robinson) has done for her team, and that is taking her team to two Final Fours. I thought she was very motivated to guard her and, with the exception of the last three and a half minutes, I thought Odyssey did a great job of guarding her.”

On the flow of the offenses…
“Well we are not going to turn down an open shot but sometimes that open shot is just too early in the shot clock. I thought we were very patient and I thought that the other four players were challenged since Brittney Griner draws a lot of attention. You get ready because you are going to be isolated a lot one-on-one on the backside and I thought we really remembered that, and we got the ball in there.”

Sophomore Post Brittney Griner
On not having to score for the team to be successful…
“It is a lot of fun. Everybody is just clicking and coach got minutes from everyone, and I didn’t have to score. Just dishing it to my teammates, it’s just all really good if we can play like that.”

Sophomore Post Destiny Williams
On the movement of the ball…
“Again it’s all because of BG. All of the attention went toward her and that gave all of us a great opportunity to cut, or stay close to the rim and knock down easy shots, or get offensive put backs or things like that. I just think that the more focus they put on BG the less focus there is on us. And that gives us the opportunity to get open shots.”

Senior Guard Mellissa Jones
On the growth of Odyssey Sims…
“I think Odyssey does a great job distributing the ball, and not just to open players, but at the right time. I think her ability to read stuff like that… she has just grown so much as a player already.”

Oklahoma Head Coach Sherri Coale
Opening statement:
“I thought Baylor played extremely well and shot extremely well in the first half. I thought (Baylor’s) start offensively put us on our heels and affected us offensively, which I knew we would have a hard time guarding them. But I thought they could have a hard time guarding us as well. We let their explosive start on offense affect our offense.”

On the shooting struggles in the first-half:
“I didn’t think we moved very well but I thought the three’s that we got were consistent with the three’s we’ve gotten all year. We just were 1-for-12. You can’t do that when you play this team because you can’t get to the rim. When we slowed down a bit and the second half and kind of got our wits back about us, I think you saw a little bit more of a realistic picture of what we do offensively.”

On the improvement of Baylor from last year:
“Just the perimeter shooting from more than one spot. The way you have to defend Odyssey (Sims) and Melissa (Jones), obviously, has always been a factor. Also, I think their depth and the way they can continue to post up other guys. You look at the points in the paint, and it’s 52-6. That’s horrific, but it’s not all (Brittney) Griner. That’s the misconception and I think that’s where they get you.”
