No. 1/1 Baylor 81, RV/RV Oklahoma 54
Ferrell Center – Waco, Texas
February 6, 2012 - Att. 8,341

  Head Coach Kim Mulkey

Opening statement:
“I’m glad they’re finally buying into what we’re teaching them on the defensive end of the floor. They are listening to the scouting reports and making it very difficult for people to score. They are taking pride in that. I thought the game was very physical. It might have been our most physical game of the year. I thought that our kids kept their composure.”

On responding to OU’s quick start...
“That’s what competitors do. You didn’t think Oklahoma was going to come in here and lay down did you? They came out shooting and moving, and they were very active on the offensive end. They made big shots early, and I thought they were much more physical in this game than they were in Norman. I thought our kids honestly needed that. We just beat another really good team."

On the long wait to play versus Texas A&M...
“Really I haven’t thought about it the last couple months. This league is too good. We’ve played Connecticut and Notre Dame, and everybody else we’ve had to think about. Now we can think about A&M.”

Post Brittney Griner

On seeing other teammates blocking shots...
“It’s exciting when anybody gets blocks. I love when Jordan (Madden) gets a block because she’s funny. She gets very happy.”

On physicality of the game...
“Sometimes you get calls you don’t think you deserve, but we just kept playing. It was a physical game, but it was a good game. I like games when you have to battle.”

On being able to make plays when the other team knows the ball is going to her...
“It boosts my confidence. It gets me going. Even though they know the ball is coming to me, I was able to get it and do what I needed to do.”

Post Brooklyn Pope

On the play of the defense tonight...
“We work on that a lot. There are times in practice where all we do is play defense, so it’s nothing new to us. Otherwise you’re going to get pulled out. Do you want to play on national TV or watch on national TV? So we play defense.”

On getting an increase in minutes the past couple of games...
“I think I’ll continue to play well if I play two minutes or one minute. As long as we win at the end it doesn’t matter how many minutes I play.”

 Head Coach Sherri Coale

On opening tonight’s game with a great start…
“I think they had the first 32 of the 41 were either layups off of our free-throws or turnovers. And she (Brittney Griner) separates herself as a post player because she has become so efficient at the free throw line. That really makes her a handful even more than she has been in the past. Even at half time I didn’t feel like we had let anything get away.”

On getting to the game to seven at one point…
“We had a couple of opportunities in which we got open shots and missed them, and went to the free throw line and didn’t finish our business. Against a team that’s as offensively volatile as they are, you have to do that. You just have to keep scoring. I thought another difference was keeping them off the offensive glass. When they did miss, a lot of times they got seconds and that’s when we kept fouling. So not being able to answer that as effectively as we liked was a little damaging, but still at halftime we felt ok. We just knew we had to weather the first four minutes of the second half, and when you go 0-for-16 to start the second half, you are not going to win many games. ”

On if this Baylor team is better than the 2010 team…
“Sure, I mean Griner has gotten better every year. That summer that she spent with USA basketball is obviously paying off. She is a much more mature player, has so much more depth to her and so many more things she can do. There are a lot of upperclassmen on the floor, and very little youth. Even Odyssey (Sims), she’s a sophomore, but she played every minute as a freshmen, so they are deep and they’ve got all those weapons .”

Guard Whitney Hand

On Baylor’s second-half run…
“I remember a lot of blocks. I felt like we got blocked a lot during that period. I think we pressured them in the first half, but they kind of got going, and when they get going, they’re going pretty fast.
