Tues., Feb. 21, 2012
Ferrell Center (Waco, Texas)
Attendance: 8,592

  Head Coach Kim Mulkey

On Shanay Washington's injury...
"They're headed to the hospital now. She's been through four ACL surgeries, so I guess her prognosis is she thinks it's torn. She heard a pop, so Shanay knows what she feels. It's a big downer. You just won a conference championship outright. You play dominating. Everybody got a chance to play, and have something like that happen during the final seconds of the game. Life's not fair."

On tonight's hustle plays...
"I thought that our transition offense was fantastic tonight. I thought that we pushed the ball a lot and created some excitement for the atmosphere here. I thought that the crowd got into it when we did those things. We rested people starting at the 13-minute mark in the second half. That's the story you need to write. The kids who played from the 13-minute mark on still maintained a decent lead. Rest is important. The flow of the game allowed us to get starters off the floor."

On how they will treat these next three games...
"We are playing to win. I guess I can get my A.D. to see if they'll cancel the games, but I don't think they'll do it. I think we all need to rest going into Kansas City. I don't think they'll agree to it. We're playing to win. That's what competitors do. You got to play to win. Two of the next three are one the road. You know how hard it is to win on the road."

Junior Forward Brooklyn Pope

On shooting 16 free throws...
"It's pretty embarrassing, isn't it? I think they're doing it on purpose now. I've worked on my free throws. It's just muscle memory, and apparently my muscles aren't strong enough to remember to do that. It gets in my head. It's awfully frustrating, but I just have to keep a cool head and knock them down. Maybe then I'll have more points than Brittney Griner."

On being the go-to player at the end of the game...
"To a certain extent it's easier because the defense will play honest. Whereas, when you have two people posting up, it's hard to get Brittney (Griner) the ball. I just think it makes it easy for me to post up strong and help them get the ball inside. It really helps us run our plays the right way."

Junior Guard Kimetria Hayden

On shooting confidently tonight...
"As the game was going I was looking for Brittney, and I noticed that I was open, but I didn't have the confidence to shoot. Coach kept telling me that someone will have to shoot it and to not pass up an open look. So I started shooting and hit a couple of shots."

On Shanay Washington's injury...
"I'm at a loss of words. It's very hard to see her go down crying saying that it's over. After the game, we gathered around her and prayed for her. We told her that everything will be okay and that she'll be on the court soon."

 Head Coach Gail Goestenkors

Opening statement...
"Congratulations to Baylor. I think they proved once again why they're the No. 1-ranked team in the country. We did some things defensively that bothered them initially, but they did what they always do and they adjust. And once they figured it out, they went on a run. They obviously, even when their shots weren't falling early, they found a way, and that's what great teams do. They find a way, and they did that with their offensive rebounding. So I thought they did a great job, and I'm disappointed overall for us. We just have to regroup.

On UT's defense early in the game...
"I thought we were doing a pretty good job, but we weren't finishing the shot with a rebound. They were missing some shots, but you have to get the rebound. Overall, our defense was good but you have to finish."

On Baylor's defense...
"They play excellent defense. Brittney gets a lot of credit for blocking and changing shots inside, but it's their perimeter defense that sets the tone."

On Griner's progress over the past three years...
"She's gotten better defensively. She doesn't get in foul trouble. Doesn't go for the shot fakes like she used to, she stays down. I also think she's better at coming out to defend three-point shooters...her offensive repertoire has really improved."

Sophomore Guard Chassidy Fussell

On Baylor's defense changing UT's offense...
"I don't feel like they change it. I feel like we become intimidated, but I don't think they change it.

On Griner's presence causing outside shooting...
"She's going to block it, I'll give her credit for that."

Senior Guard Yvonne Anderson

On UT's ability to regroup...
"We have to let this one go and get ready for OU. There's nothing we can change now. We can just learn from the little things that we haven't been doing the whole season and commit to doing them versus OU."

On how Griner changes the way she plays offense...
"She definitely makes you want to shoot more outside shots. As a guard, she intimidates you to the point where you want to shoot outside. Our posts don't really look to score versus her. It's just an intimidation factor."
