#7 Baylor 97 – St. Edward’s 43 – Nov. 3, 2009
Ferrell Center (Waco, Texas) – Att.: 6,095

Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey:
On the game:
“Let’s start with the bad. You can’t shoot that percentage from the foul line in a close game. That is not good. If we shoot that many threes we better shoot a little better percentage than 33 (percent). We need to make those. I thought that when you play as many people as we played tonight sometimes it can get sloppy and it did. This game isn’t a win, it isn’t a loss. It is an exhibition game and stats don’t count, but it was good to be on the floor.”

On Melissa Jones’ play:
“She is just wanting to become a complete basketball player. She is growing and she is a captain. I bet like any competitive player she doesn’t want to have any flaw to her game. She didn’t miss a shot all night.”

On the defense in the second half:
“I thought our defense was better in the second half. We gave up too many points in the first half.”

On the crowd:
“It was good to see the crowd we had here. An exhibition game and you have over 6,000 fans here, I thought that was very special.”

On the play of the freshmen:
“I thought they were fine. I thought that they were probably like a lot of freshmen that they were a little bit nervous and excited at the same time. The effort was there. The mistakes are going to continue to be mistakes until they become more comfortable and become more experienced.”

Guard Melissa Jones
On the team’s play:
“It is good to have the ability that we have on this team. It is awesome to have different looks when the focus is on different players. It just gives the ability to have some other players some open looks and I happened to have a couple of those.”

Forward Brittney Griner
On getting her first game action:
“It was really fun and to have so many fans come out for an exhibition game, it was wonderful. The spirit here is great. It was just great to get out on the floor in front of all our fans.”

St. Edward’s Head Coach Jennifer White
On the game:
“The first half I thought that we played really hard and really well, but their talent physical play and height overcomes you. You can only sustain for so long. The upside for Baylor is tremendous. They are going to be, once they get some experience, some games under their belt, they are going to be a team to reckon with. The thing that you can’t give kids right away is experience and that is what they need. Once they get the experience, I would be very, very scared.”

On St. Edwards defense against Brittney Griner:
“When we were in practice our kids were saying, “we weren’t going to be the first to give her a dunk,” and we weren’t. So we are going to pass that torch on to someone else and let them be the first team. But that was a goal of our kids, to not let her have a dunk. She is going to dunk in a game and it is just a matter of time. We just didn’t want to be the first team it happened to.”
