Ferrell Center – Waco, Texas

Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On Brittney Griner’s performance tonight:
“Well in 26 minutes of play, those are some pretty good stats right there. It is the first game, they want to do well. Their hearts are racing and I just thought we had a lot of missed free throws, a lot of missed threes and I think fatigue was a big part of that. We were able to play a lot of people and get the main group off of the floor, because we have such a quick turnaround.”

On being able to get out to a big lead early:
“Well what is key, and I think we have to remember sometimes, is that you saw zone all night, and you saw them really use most of the 30-second clock, so there wasn’t a lot of points scored. A lot of that has to do with substitutions. We needed to win, and we need to get on that floor tomorrow and shoot some free throws. I am not sure how much we can do physically, but we can shoot.”

On the start of the season:
“Well it is always a good start when you win. You are not going to walk out on that floor and be the same team you were when you finished last year. We are not a polished team yet by any means. The talent is there, the effort is there and we will just keep working and getting better.”

Baylor Post Brittney Griner
On her rebounding:
“I feel like I should get more boards. I just need to work on getting in position, blocking out, using my height and actually moving around. That is something I am going to try to work on.”

Baylor Guard Odyssey Sims
On her comfort level from last season to this year:
“Not a lot has really changed. I came in last year ready to play whether that was in front of two people or in front of 2000 people. It really doesn’t make a difference. It is more about what we do on the court. The crowd is just a bunch of people of people watching. I am not that nervous if I play good or bad, the most important thing is what we do on the floor.”

Howard Head Coach Niki Reid Geckeler
On the game tonight:
“Well you are playing against the number one team in the country. There is no other team in the country with a 6-8 post that is able to do what she does. I think, from that perspective, they really came out and controlled the game from the beginning.”
