NO. 10 BAYLOR (7-1) 75, ST. JOHN'S (7-1) 65
FERRELL CENTER - WACO, TEXAS
DEC. 6, 2008 - ATTENDANCE: 6,047
Baylor Head Coach Kim Mulkey
On the game:
"(St. John's shot) 35 percent in the first half and 65 percent in the second-half. We have to watch and evaluate film because it is returning players out on the floor not finishing the game. Some of those shots were just prayers and some of the time we were getting beat on dribble-penetration. Before I come in here and give you the exact reasoning, I need to look at the film first. I know it is disappointing to leave an arena when it was a 20 point game for pretty much the whole night, but when you leave and look at the score it is a 10 point game."
On Baylor's offensive production:
"I thought we got better looks and we finished some shots when the shot clock was winding down. I still thought that we stood a lot in some of the things that we were trying to do. I thought we shot a better percentage, close to 50 percent for the game. I think Ashley Field has given me very good minutes... I just think the kid is going to be a player here. I thought Jessica Morrow coming off of the bench was a spark for us. I thought those two kids coming off of the bench really did their job."
On responding to the press defense:
"I thought that we did (handle the press well). I am so use to having ball handlers that can dribble out of traps and we are not that kind of team that is going to be able to do a lot of that. We have seen the press, we know it is coming. Teams are going to going to press you and you have to not just get up the floor, we have to finish. I thought we finished some, but not enough. "
Baylor Forward Rachel Allison
On the importance of getting the win:
"We will take a win anytime. I think it was kind of good for us to get back out here. We have been fighting throughout practice all week. It is good to get home and get a win like this and to maybe regain some of the confidence that we might have lost in the Virgin Islands."
Baylor Guard/Forward Jessica Morrow
On coming off of the bench:
"Whatever the coach decides, she is smart and she knows what is best for the team. I want what is best for best for the team, so if I am not starting, I will come off of the bench. I just want to win and be successful."
St. John's Head Coach Kim Barnes
"They are a great team, a great program and a great coach. We were happy to come in here and battle with them. I think they caught us off guard at the beginning of the game but I was happy with the way we battle back and didn't quit in the second half."
On what Baylor did well:
"I think they caused us to turnover the ball a significant amount in the first half and our turnovers were so bad it resulted in easy baskets for them, so I think it was their pressure defense. This is probably the best team we have faced thus far and they came out of the gates and it took us a little while to wake up from their pressure. "
