The top-ranked Baylor Lady Bears, 14-1 overall and 1-0 in Big 12 action, take their 11-game win streak into the contest at the University of Texas on Wednesday, Jan. 12.
Baylor is led on the season by sophomore post Brittney Griner's 21.9 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. Freshman guard Odyssey Sims follows with 12.6 points a contest while senior guard Melissa Jones averages 9.6 points a game. Sophomore forward/post Brooklyn Pope is the team's second-leading rebounder with 6.9 a game and scores 8.4 points an outing.
Gail Goestenkors' Texas squad, 11-4 on the season and 0-1 in league play, is led by 6-2 senior guard Kathleen Nash's 16.4 points a game while 5-10 freshman guard Hallie Christofferson follows closely with 16.3 a contest. Junior guard Ashleigh Fontenette also averages double-digit scoring with 14.2 a game and Yvonne Anderson, a junior guard, manages 11.9 a contest. Ashley Gayle, a 6-4 junior forward, is the team's top rebounder with 9.9 an outing while Nash hauls down 8.3 a game.
For the first time in program history, Baylor is ranked No. 1 in the AP and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches' Polls. It marks the second straight week the Lady Bears are ranked No. 1 in both polls.
Head coach Kim Mulkey is the first individual ever to play for a women's team ranked No. 1 among AP voters while also later becoming coach of a team selected to No. 1.
Earlier this season sophomore post Brittney Griner became the program's all-time shot blocker, she now has 296 career blocks to rank No. 3 on the Big 12's all-time list (Texas Tech's Cisti Greenwalt is No. 2 with 300).
Baylor has held its opponents to a .307 shooting percentage this season while shooting .486.
On the season, freshman point guard Odyssey Sims (29-61, .475) and senior guard Melissa Jones (14-33, .438) are a combined 43-94 (.458) from 3-point range.

CREEPING UP ON 1,000
In just 50 games, Brittney Griner has scored 973 points, thus needing 27 points to become the 28th Lady Bear to achieve the 1,000-point milestone.
It took former Lady Bear standout Sophia Young, a two-time All-American, 67 games to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Nine of the 28 players on BU's 1,000-point list have played under head coach Kim Mulkey.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
Located in Austin, Texas, the Texas Longhorns are 11-4 on the season and 0-1 in Big 12 play. Three of Texas' losses have come against ranked opponents, Stanford (93-78), Michigan State (71-57) and Tennessee (92-77). In addition, the Longhorns opened Big 12 play with an 85-80 overtime loss at Missouri.
