WACO, Texas - For the second straight season, Brittney Griner and Odyssey Sims are on the State Farm "Wade Watch" list, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), announced today. Both players were finalists for the 2012 Wade Trophy and Griner went on to win the coveted award.
The State Farm Wade Trophy is presented annually to the nation's most outstanding NCAA Division I women's basketball player.
The Wade Watch List, from which The State Farm Wade Trophy recipient is chosen, consists of players selected on the basis of game and season statistics, leadership, character, effect on their team and overall playing ability.
The list will be trimmed to 12 finalists in Mid-March. The Wade Trophy winner will be announced during the WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA Women's Final Four in New Orleans.
Both players are also on the recently-released midseason Wooden Award list.
Griner, a 6-8 senior post and Preseason National Player of the Year, leads BU in scoring and rebounding with a league-leading 22.8 points and 8.5 boards per game. Griner currently has 2,903 career points, 1,144 career rebounds, and NCAA records of 675 blocks and 12 dunks to her credit. Griner recently became the Big 12's all-time scoring leader and the NCAA career block record holder (675), men or women. She already owns the NCAA record for career dunks (12).
Junior point guard and All-American candidate Odyssey Sims, who averages 12.4 points an outing, also dishes out 5.7 assists per game and is 48-of-57 (.842) from the free throw line.
In addition, Griner has been named Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Players of the Week, as chosen by a media panel. Griner extended her record for career women's basketball weekly honors to 26 and earned her seventh award of the season, including fifth straight.
Griner averaged 35.0 points, 12.5 rebounds, 5.0 blocks and 5.5 assists in No. 1 Baylor's road wins over Texas Tech and No. 19 Oklahoma State. She shot .674 (29-of-43) from the floor and .667 (12-of-18) from the charity stripe. In addition, Griner became the Big 12's all-time leading scorer, passing Oklahoma State's Andrea Riley. She has 2,903 career points to rank No. 12 on the NCAA Division I career scoring list. Griner hit 17-of-25 shots from the floor en route to a season-high 40 points at Texas Tech along with a season-high-tying 15 rebounds and seven blocks. In addition, Griner threw down her fifth dunk of the season to raise her NCAA career record total to 12. Against Oklahoma State, she recorded 30 points and 10 rebounds, while dishing out a career-high seven assists.
