STORY LINES
No. 15 Baylor, 16-5 on the season and 3-4 in league play, earned its first Big 12 road win of the season on Wednesday and seeks to win back-to-back league games for the first time this season as it hosts Colorado on Sat., Feb. 6, at 7:30 p.m.
BU's game at Texas (Jan. 31) marked the first of four road games in its next five contests; at Texas, at Kansas State, hosting Colorado (Feb. 6), at Oklahoma (Feb. 10), at Iowa State (Feb. 13), before the Lady Bears close the season with four of six at home.
The Colorado Buffaloes are 12-8 overall and 2-5 in Big 12 action. The Buffaloes enter the contest well-rested, their last game was Jan. 30, an 80-64 home loss to the league-leading Nebraska Cornhuskers.
Saturday night is Family Night for the Lady Bear program, families will be honored during halftime ceremonies.
Former Lady Bear Monica Arnold Mitchell, a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter, will be honored by the "B" Association as a Baylor Legend.
BU freshman post Brittney Griner became just the seventh female to dunk in a regular-season NCAA contest when she threw one down against Jacksonville State, Nov. 24. Griner added two more dunks to her total against Texas State (Jan. 2) and added another at Kansas State (Feb. 3). She is also a defensive threat as a shot blocker and alterer with her 88" wing span. She has blocked a school and Big 12 record 122 shots and altered 56 more.
As a team, Baylor ranks No. 1 nationally in blocks per game (7.5); No. 2 in field goal percentage (.490) and field goal percentage defense (32.3); No. 6 in scoring margin (20.6), rebound margin (11.1) and 3-point field goal percentage defense (25.3); No. 19 in scoring offense (76.0) and No. 22 in scoring defense (55.5).
In 10 seasons under head coach Kim Mulkey, Baylor is 253-71 (.781), which ranks her No. 4 nationally in winning percentage. In addition, the Lady Bear program ranks No. 6 among the NCAA Division I's winningest teams over that span.
Brittney Griner blocks more shots per game (5.7) than 321 of the 332 NCAA Division I schools and only 19 teams beside Baylor have blocked more shots than Griner. She ranks No. 2 nationally in blocks (122) and in just 21 games, broke Courtney Paris' Big 12 single-season record of 119 set during the Sooners' 36-game 2005-06 campaign.
In Baylor's 65-47 victory at Kansas State on Wednesday, the five freshman logged 115 of the 200 minutes, or 57.5 percent of the playing time. Brittney Griner played 40 minutes while Shanay Washington tallied 35, Jordan Madden played 22, Mariah Chandler logged 15 and Kimetria Hayden saw three minutes of action. Add in sophomore Terran Condrey's 23 minutes and underclassmen accounted for 69 percent of the playing time.
The Lady Bears remain the Big 12 leader in field goal percentage (.490), field goal percentage defense (.323), rebounding offense (44.4), rebound margin (+10.6) and blocked shots (7.5).
