WACO, Texas - Gary Blair (Texas A&M) was chosen Big 12 Coach of the Year while Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) was honored as Big 12 Player of the Year, highlighting the 2006-07 Phillips 66 All-Big 12 Conference Women's Basketball Awards.
Baylor's Bernice Mosby, Angela Tisdale, Jhasmin Player and Danielle Wilson all received league honors from the coaches. Mosby, a senior, was named Newcomer of the Year and All-Big 12 first team, while Tisdale, a junior point guard, earned second team honors for the second consecutive season. Player, a sophomore guard, was named to the All-Defensive team and Wilson, a freshman post, received All-Rookie team recognition.
Also joining Mosby in earning the league's top honors were Andrea Riley (Oklahoma State) as Big 12 Freshman of the Year, Courtney Paris (Oklahoma) was named Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and Danielle Gant (Texas A&M) garnered the Sixth Man Award. The honors were voted on by the league's head coaches, with coaches not allowed to vote for their own players.
Blair led Texas A&M to a share of its first-ever women's basketball conference title. The Aggies and Oklahoma tied for the 2006-07 Big 12 women's basketball regular season championship. A&M posted its first undefeated season at home in the 33-year history of the program with a 16-0 record at Reed Arena. Its 23 victories this season tie for the third-most in school history. The Aggies are 5-1 vs. Top 25 competition and have won nine of their last 10 games. Texas A&M enters the Phillips 66 Big 12 Women's Basketball Championship as the No. 1 seed after winning the tiebreaker over OU.
Paris leads the Big 12 in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots for all games and conference-only games. Her season averages are 24.0 points, 16.0 rebounds and 3.41 blocks. She improved her numbers in Big 12-only games to 24.3 ppg, 16.5 rpg and 3.75 bpg. The 6-4 sophomore center has scored 30-plus points in five games this season and over 40 in two games, including a Big 12 season-high 43 points vs. New Mexico (12/30/06). Paris has scored 20 or more points in 19 games in 2006-07 and grabbed at least 20 rebounds in three. The Piedmont, Calif., native registered a double-double in all 28 games to date.
In her one season with Baylor, 6-1 senior forward/center Mosby has led the team in scoring (18.0 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg) while ranking second in the league in scoring and third in rebounding. She ranks in the same positions for conference-only games with 18.0 ppg and 9.9 rpg. The Brooksville, Fla., native has poured in 20-plus points on 15 occasions and collected 13 double-doubles.
Riley has helped lead Oklahoma State to one of the best turnarounds in the nation this season as the Cowgirls have won 14 more games from a year ago and finished sixth in the conference. The 5-5 guard is third in the Big 12 in both assists and steals with 5.04 apg and 2.04 spg. She ranks 14th in scoring with 12.5 ppg. Riley also ranks third in assists (4.63 apg) and steals (1.81 spg) in Big 12 games as well as 11th in scoring (13.6 ppg).
Gant is the first recipient of the Big 12's inaugural Sixth Man Award. The 5-11 sophomore is the Aggies' first player off the bench and started 13 of 28 games. She ranks third on the team in scoring (10.6 ppg) and second in rebounding (7.2 rpg). Gant has connected on 56.0 percent (117-209) of her field goal attempts, good for fourth in the conference and ranks second in steals with 2.07 per game. The Oklahoma City native is 25th in the Big 12 in scoring for both overall and conference games while ranking 11th in rebounds for all games and tied for ninth in league games.
