The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), in cooperation with State Farm, announced the All-Region nominees for the NCAA Division I 2011 State Farm Coaches' All-America Team. The State Farm Coaches' All-America Team selection committee will review these 52 candidates and cut the list to 40 finalists on Monday, March 21. The 40 finalists will all be in the running for selection to the 10-member State Farm Coaches' All-America Team.
The Baylor trio of sophomore Brittney Griner, senior Melissa Jones and freshman Odyssey Sims were named to the seven-member State Farm Coaches' All-Region 5 team. All three are candidates for the 2011 State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team. Griner is one of just three sophomores nationally to make all-region while Sims in the only freshman listed.
Former Lady Bear Sophia Young became Baylor's first two-time WBCA All-American with selections in 2005 and `06. Suzie Snider Eppers was Baylor's first WBCA All-American in 1977 and Sheila Lambert was honored in 2002. Griner was an honorable mention pick as a freshman in 2010.
Griner, a 6-8 post from Houston, Texas, is averaging a team-leading 22.6 points and 7.8 rebounds a game this season, which ranks among the NCAA Division I and Big 12 Conference leaders. In addition, she has blocked 148 shots to rank No. 2 nationally. Griner was recently named Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Championship, All-Big 12 first team, Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and to the league's All-Defensive team.
Jones, a 5-11 guard from Thornton, Colo., is among the Big 12 leaders in almost every statistical category and ranks No. 2 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (3.1). She is averaging 8.3 points and 7.0 rebounds a game while leading the team in assists (122) and steals (63). Jones was a 2011 first-team All-Big 12 selection.
Sims, a 5-9 freshman point guard from Irving, Texas, ranks second on the team in scoring at 13.5 points per game and is No. 1 in the Big 12 in 3-point field goal percentage at .456. She was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors.
The State Farm Coaches' All-America Basketball Team for NCAA Division I will be announced during the WBCA National Convention on Saturday, April, 2 at 9 a.m. (ET) in Indianapolis, site of the 2011 Women's Final Four.
Griner, Jones and Sims are joined on the seven-member All-Region 5 team by Danielle Adams and Tyra White from Texas A&M, Kelsey Bolte of Iowa State and Oklahoma's Danielle Robinson.
