Baylor News Conference Quotes

 Head Coach Kim Mulkey

On how they are preparing for the tournament:
“Obviously you spend time on your next opponent, and, of course, we’ve spent our time on Prairie View. We really can’t wait until the day in between to prepare for our next opponent, so you present information to the team on both Princeton and Florida State. You can’t anticipate who’s going to win. They’re the 8 and 9 seeds, and those are usually the good games, but you prepare for Prairie View first. Then we will have at least presented the other scouting reports to them, worked on it in practice, probably without them really understanding what we’re working on, particularly on the defensive side of the floor. Then you go and if you win your first game versus Prairie View, go into greater depth on Monday, prior to the Tuesday game.”

On the long break before the NCAA tournament:
“Well, that’s a tough question because we’ve never been put in this position before. I do think it’s good that we’re playing at home. I do think it’s good that we’ll play before our fans because if we’re out of sync or it affects us, at least they can be that sixth man and help get us back in the flow. I do think that we’ve done enough in practice against each other that I believe sometimes, your own team is as good if not better than the opponents you could be playing. I’ve said it all along, there are sometimes where playing against each other is better than playing two or three games a week. To watch them in an intrasquad scrimmage last Saturday, it was scary good. Brooklyn Pope challenging Brittney Griner; that was quite a match up. But, we’ll see. I don’t know if I like the long delay. I don’t know if it’s going to be good or bad. At least we have the opportunity to open this thing up at home.”

On when she will miss the senior class:
“Once the season’s done (is when we look towards next year). You don’t have time to think about next year. When you start coaching at this level, I guess it’s just something that you know is going to happen. You can’t keep them forever. My emotion, honestly, will be when the last game is played. If that’s a championship game, if that’s losing out before we get to a championship game, that’s usually when your emotions flow.”

On how the long break compares to coming back during the preseason:
“Doing the intrasquad scrimmage was going back to October because you don’t do that. Once you get to playing two and three games a week in conference, you have a quick turnaround before you play the next game. But we had such a long period of time, we were on break, Spring Break, we didn’t have our Dream Team here, our guys were gone home, so we had to do something. So, I divided the teams up and just wanted to see people compete. And they did. I didn’t want it to end. But I realized after being on the floor an hour and forty-five minutes, we don’t need to go any longer. It was physical, it was just good, and it’s what we needed. I maybe should’ve done it a little more during the two weeks but I just thought that one Saturday was special for them to challenge each other.”

On getting to the national championship game:
“Prairie View. Prairie View, Prairie View, Prairie View. That’s all you can think about right now and after Prairie View, if you continue to move on, then you get in the film room and you figure out who’s going to guard who, and you do as much work as you can in a short period of time and get ready for the next game. I guess you kind of take it in intervals. If you’ve got two games here, if you win those than you’ve got two at Oklahoma City, and two in New Orleans. So I guess you could break it down in twos. We really break it down one game at a time. That’s really all you can do. When you look ahead is when you make a mistake. But we’ll be prepared, and we’ll do our homework. We will not over-coach and not overdo it. At this stage of the season, you don’t change a whole lot. You just have to go play. And that’s what I’ve told the team. When we watch our opponents or our anticipated opponents, it’s hard for me to watch their defense because we never see what we see on film, and I learned that with Griner. Two years ago, it’s like I don’t even know why I watch teams defensively because they don’t do what we see on film. So we spend a lot of time really on us, what we think we might see and what we have seen through the years.”

Junior Guard Odyssey Sims

On being ready to play:
“We’ve been waiting a very long time, and I’m really excited (the NCAA tournament) is here. I wish we were playing today, but we’ve got one more day to practice and get better, and I’m really looking forward to tomorrow.”

On how time off was spent:
“We worked on a little bit of everything: offense, defense, transitions, different scenarios, being down, being up, and managing the game, just a little bit of everything. We had enough time to work on everything we needed to. We’re going to work on a little bit more today and get prepared for tomorrow.”

On having two weeks off with each other:
“I wouldn’t say it was intense. We had a lot of time off and sometimes Coach (Mulkey) would put us against each other. We would take it as a challenge. We challenge ourselves first and then challenge one another. We make each other better when we play against each other. That’s what we’ve been doing, and we look at it as a good thing, not a negative thing. We have to make each other better, and if we don’t we’re not doing our job.”

Senior Post Brittney Griner

On being ready to play:
“It’s been two long weeks, and it’s time to play. We’re definitely ready to get on the floor and just start hooping.”

On how time off was spent:
“We rest first, and then we got into practice. We worked on Baylor, worked out some rough edges on the offense, worked on our defense, worked on scenarios, just different little things and got ready for PV.”

On watching the other tournaments:
“I’ve been watching our guys play, and I’ve been watching some basketball. I’ve been watching some of the women’s games too. I’ve been watching a little bit of everything.”
