Three Baylor women's basketball players were honored by The Associated Press on Tuesday. Brittney Griner was an AP All-American first-team selection while Melissa Jones and Odyssey Sims earned honorable mention honors. The trio's selections brings the number of Lady Bear AP All-Americans to nine players.
Griner (2011) and Sophia Young (2006) are Baylor's lone first-team selections and are the only two-time Baylor AP honorees, they were second team picks in 2010 and 2005, respectively. Steffanie Blackmon was a third-team pick in 2005 while Danielle Crockrom (2002), Bernice Mosby (2007), Angela Tisdale (2008), Rachel Allison (2008), Jones and Sims were honorable mentions.
Griner, a 6-8 sophomore post, is averaging a team-leading 23.1 points and 7.8 rebounds a game this season, which ranks among the NCAA Division I and Big 12 Conference leaders. In addition, she has blocked a nation-best 168 shots. Griner was recently named Most Outstanding Player of the Big 12 Championship, All-Big 12 first team, Big 12 Player of the Year, Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and to the league's All-Defensive team. In addition, she is a finalist for both the Wooden and Naismith awards.
Jones, a 5-11 senior, is among the Big 12 leaders in almost every statistical category and ranks No. 2 nationally in assist/turnover ratio (2.9). She is averaging 8.2 points and 6.9 rebounds a game while leading the team in assists (135) and steals (65). Jones was a 2011 first-team All-Big 12 selection.
Sims, a 5-9 freshman point guard ranks second on the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game and is No. 1 in the Big 12 in 3-point field goal percentage at .456. She was named Big 12 Freshman of the Year and earned first-team All-Big 12 honors.
