|| BAYLOR QUOTES: PRE NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
On what stands out to her about previous game vs. Notre Dame:
"I can't remember a
whole lot other than what Sims brings back to my
memory. I remember an outstanding basketball
"Specifics of the game? We had too many
games between then and now, and as we watched
film, we just to break down again the scouting
report that we had on them then and how they've
changed. I would just say they're a different team,
we're a different team, but the system is not
I remember they pressed as they did last
night against Connecticut some. I remember that
their depth is about like our depth. They play
about the same number of people. And have a great back
On Brittney Griner's place in the history of women's basketball:
"I've challenged both Brittney and Odyssey to
win a national championship. At the same time I
don't think they need it to validate being the
greatest in the game.
"With or without a game it starts what she
does on the defensive end of the floor. I've said it
many times: There have been players before her
that dunk, there have been players before her that
block shots, but there's never been a player before
her that intimidates you on the defensive end of
"She has a presence in the paint on the
defensive end of the floor like none other. I've
played with 6'9". I've watched 6'9" dunk the ball.
I've dunked the ball. I've been on an Olympic
team. I've played in a National. I've been against
the Ulyana Semenovas. Brittney Griner's
presence on the defensive end of the floor
separates her from any player that has ever played the game.
"She doesn't need a national championship
to validate her place in this sport. Would it be
nice? Absolutely. Does it motivate her?
On possibility of achieving perfect season:
"Win or lose tomorrow,
we're going to head back to Waco and we're going
to have a disappointing feeling. Unfortunately,
we're 39-0 and you don't want to lose that last
game. But if we were 30 and 10 we wouldn't want
to lose the last game.
"We know this: That whoever beats us --
and we've said this all year long, whoever beats us
just make sure that you didn't beat yourself. You
make sure that team was better than you that
night. And if you do that, you can't fault your effort.
And Notre Dame was here last year. They played
for the national championship and lost. They have
as bitter a taste in their mouth as we do losing to
A&M when we played them the fourth time in the
On reaching the championship game:
"We're excited finally here, but we're not relieved. It's not over yet. There's one more
game. We can be relieved and happy and excited after the game. This is what we've
been working on since we lost to Texas A&M last year."
On the difference between the run to the title game two years ago vs. this season:
"Our eyes were big and you could see it. Every time we won and got a little bit further,
we were celebrating like we won the national championship. This year, each time we
advance, we celebrate and we're happy, but you can tell in our faces that we're on a
mission. Now we're here and we've got to take care of business."
On facing Notre Dame:
"When we go into the game, we know it could go either way. We've just got to play our
game. We can't go into the game overconfident and overlook [Notre Dame], but then
we can't go in thinking we're God Almighty and we're just going to win the game. No
one is going to hand us the game. We've got to work hard and fight for it."
On reaching the national championship game:
"It is a dream come true for all of us. It's an honor. I think that we respectfully earned
it with all the workouts we did throughout the summer and all the games we had and
how we played. We played with a lot of emotion which brought us here. We haven't
done anything yet until we bring home the championship on Tuesday. We still have
unfinished business, until we win the basketball game on Tuesday all of this is just for
On Baylor's perfect record this season:
"The season went by so fast. I can't believe we played 39 basketball games already. I'm
happy that we are here and this is what we are here for. We didn't' finish the job
against A&M last year and we worked our tails off in the summer. We took every
basketball game like it was the championship game so we would be ready. We will play
like we always have been playing, with a lot of intensity and be aggressive. Notre Dame
is a great basketball team, otherwise they wouldn't be here. It is going to be an exciting
game and we can't wait to play."
On the previous matchup with Notre Dame this season:
"Both teams have grown since then. There are a lot of things that are going to change.
I don't think it's going to be a high scoring game because it is the championship game
and both teams are going to make defensive stops and get rebounds."
On what she is looking forward to the most in the game against Notre Dame:
"Our defense. Everybody's been talking about our defense. Our defense has to be great
tomorrow. And us just going through our plays, executing right and coming out with the
On how Notre Dame will match up with Baylor because ND is so guard-oriented:
"We have the height advantage, so it's going to be hard for them to guard us. We're
quick; they're quick too. We have drivers; they have shooters. It's going to be different
On what the difference will be between this game and the previous game against Notre Dame:
"It wasn't quite defense in that game. We scored a lot of points, but this time, defense is going to be a factor."
On her last match-up with Notre Dame's Skylar Diggins:
"Personally I thought she played well. She hit some great shots at the end of the game
and had almost 30 points against us. I thought she got out to a really fast start and she
started attacking us early. I tried to contain her as much as I could, but her just being
the player that she is she's going to get hers at the end of the day."
On defending Skylar Diggins:
"I just try to pressure the ball as much as I can and try to create turnovers. If I'm
pressuring the ball it makes it hard for her to see and run the offense and stuff like
that, so I try to frustrate my opponent and create the turnover and if not I just make
sure I do my job on the defensive end."
On Baylor women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey and her preparation throughout
"This whole year coach has been saying "unfinished business" and we've been hungry
all year. Yeah, we're undefeated but like coach says we can win the Big 12
Tournament, we can go undefeated but we can get here and come so far and we lose
and then like she said we haven't done anything. Everything that we've done all year
still doesn't mean anything because if we don't leave here with a ring, we go home with
a loss. We have the chance, tomorrow night, to make history, but we know that we still
have to play hard. Like Coach has been telling us all year, it doesn't matter what kind of
record you have, we could lose 15 to 20 games but if we come here and win a national
championship the record doesn't matter. So that goes without saying, so coming in
tomorrow night we are 0-0."
On the motto `Unfinished Business':
"As soon as we walk in our locker room on the wall, there's a sign that says `Unfinished
Business.' Sometimes in the locker room, they'll put up bulletin boards with stuff, but
mostly we have the bracelets and we have a folder with plays that has `Unfinished
Business.' on it."
If winning the national title is the only way for Griner to be called the greatest ever:
"I don't think she ever won anything in high school. Everyone is like `for her to be a
success she has to win a national title.' Sometimes, people look at it as she has to have
other players around her because she can't win a game by herself."
On if Griner and Odyssey Sims are two of the best in the game:
"Her and Odyssey [Sims], and I'm not just saying that because they're on our team, but
Odyssey has a lot of potential. She knows when to shoot the ball, when to get the ball
inside or when to take players one-on-one. She's a good on the ball-defender too. She
can steal the ball from anybody. Brittney can shoot outside the paint and can shoot
threes, too. Coach Mulkey won't let her shoot threes until we get up by like 30 and we
run a play for her to shoot a three. We did it a couple times in games and she actually
made them. It's great we have them on our team."
