WACO, Texas - The awards continue to pile up for future Lady Bear basketball player Melissa Jones.
Jones, a 5-10 guard who will enroll at Baylor for the upcoming season, recently capped an outstanding prep career garnering Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Girls High School Athlete of the Year honors to go along with Colorado Girl's Player of the Year and Gatorade's Colorado Girls' Basketball Player of the Year recognition.
Jones led the Legacy High School Lightning to a 24-4 record and a berth in the Class 5A championship game, averaging 22 points, 10 rebounds, 5.8 steals, 4.5 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. The 5-foot-10 Jones poured in a combined 52 points and pulled down 26 total rebounds in Final Four postseason play, including a double-double (25 points, 10 rebounds) in a title-game loss to Highlands Ranch.
Jones, who hails from Thornton, Colo., has maintained a 3.56 GPA in the classroom. A two-time all-State basketball selection, Jones, was also an all-State middle blocker in volleyball and an all-Conference selection in soccer. In addition, she serves as an active volunteer in her community, devoting long hours to coaching youth league basketball players.
Jones recently played in the Colorado High School All-Star game and led the Blue squad to a 72-50 victory. She scored a game-high 16 points, including draining three treys, and added six rebounds and three assists while earning player of the game honors.
